SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU ADOPT:

The Presa Canario breed in general can be dominant, dog aggressive and grows quite large.  In general, it can be a good property guardian, good with kids and other smaller animals at times.

HOWEVER, that's not what you are looking at right now.  You are looking at a rescue site.  These dogs are usually taken out of neglect or abandoment situations.  They may never have had an owner pay enough attention to them to be worth bonding with.  They are oftentimes underfed, undernourished and undersocialized.  They're main experience in life has been living on the end of a chain,  or in a small chainlink kennel, and never seeing the outside world or other humans.  They may have been bred, in order to let their owner "recoup his investment".  Unspoiled Rescued presa puppies are rare.

IF you are looking at rescue in order to "get a great dog cheap" because you do not want to pay a breeder's prices, then a rescue presa is not for you.

In most cases we are dealing with adults who have been so beaten down by life, that they will not have predictable guardian instincts.  If they've never had anyone worthy of their love before, why should they guard them? So if you're looking for a rescue presa as a guard dog, then you will  be disappointed.  They often need help adjusting to society, and the fact that yes they will get fed daily.

We try to foster all dogs before they are adopted through us, to get a better feel for their individuality.  However, sometimes some issues only surface when they are in a home, and they relax.

Due to the dog aggressive nature of the breed in general, and add in the neglect most of our dogs have had, they cannot always be placed with other dogs.  A good rule of thumb is to get a dog of the opposite sex to what you have, but sometimes they still need to meet first.  RARELY can you incorporate a rescued adult presa into a household with several dogs, especially ones of other guardian breeds.  If this is your situation, please do not waste your time or ours by applying for a presa.

If you are not near where the dog is being fostered (for example, on another coast) please be prepared that you will more then likely need to have the dog shipped to you, which can cost up to $500 extra. Otherwise we try very hard to transport ourselves, and with the help of other rescues and volunteers, but sometimes this will take some time to come together.
